This 1934 Fordor Sedan DeLuxe is an original steel bodied hot-rod, and shows beautifully in an “Ice Blue Metallic” acrylic enamel paint, with hand painted pin-striping. The body (along with the long since departed frame and running gear) was originally sold to a family in Butte Montana, and after 85 years and only three known owners, it still lives within 85 miles of its original delivery location. To the current owner’s knowledge, this was purchased along with two other sedans for family use, and consistent with the time it was used for all manner of Montana based activities, including hunting. It was on one such hunting trip that it was abandoned in a field near Anaconda, MT, where it resided for decades in the steel friendly and dry climes of Western Montana. Eventually it was purchased by another Butte, MT resident, and carefully restored back to life: this time around as a Classic American Hot-Rod.
The current owner purchased this car in its hot rod state in January of 1994. His first order of business was installing a new 327 small block Chevy engine (casting # 3782870, a mid 60’s 327 casting number for engines put into a variety of high powered chevy applications, including the Corvette). The engine had 35,000 miles on the block and was rebuilt and installed by Bill Crnich of Butte, MT. It features a Holley 4160 4 barrel carb with manual choke, Holley Contender 38 intake, a Crower 00903 flat tappet cam, and Keith Black 11:1 pistons. This is an excellent set up for strong power and great sound in a reliable package.
The transmission is a ‘72 GM TH400 hydramatic 3 speed auto, legendary for its durability with ready parts availability, this trans was often used in truck applications in the 70s and is known to handle 450 lb ft. of torque in stock configuration. Power is routed to the rear wheels through a 3:30 rear end.
Paint is a DuPont acrylic enamel with clear coat, called “Ice Blue Metallic,” a color offered on ‘84 Jeep models. It suits the four-door Fordor body particularly well, far from ordinary but sophisticated.
Stopping is accomplished through ‘75 Ford Mustang disk brakes, original equipment on V8s, in the front, and ‘65 Ford Fairlane drums in the rear. Suspension components are largely ‘75 V8 Mustang. Wheels are Cragar Star, and the extreme staggered tires are Michelin XZX front in a 175/75 R14, and Michelin GT rear in a 255/70 R15. The tires show well with plenty of tread and no dry rot, but they are thought to be from the original restoration, and replacement is recommended based on age for extended street use.
This vehicle is a solid and reliable driver. It is driven sparingly but on a regular basis by the current owner, and kept in a clean and dry airplane hangar. Immediate needs include new tires (for highway use), and a broken passenger side outer door handle. The paint shows well but is no longer concours quality. The overall condition of this car could best be described as “very good,” a high quality older restoration showing wear, with full functionality.
